Consultative Meeting on GCLME Activities

Opening Ceremony

Preceding the Fourth Regional Steering Committee Meeting of the Guinea Current Large Marine Ecosystem (GCLME) Project, a Consultative Meeting on Programmes was organized between 29 January and 01 February, 2007 at the Interim Guinea Current Commission (IGCC). This Meeting was Opened by Hon. Gifty Ohene- Konadu, Deputy Minister for Trade, Industry, Private Sector Development and President’s Special Initiatives (PSI), Ghana, in presence of Prof. Alfred Oteng Yeboah, chairman and Former Deputy Director-General of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Prof. Chidi Ibe, Executive Secretary, IGCC / Regional Director, GCLME, Dr. Kenneth Sherman, of US-NOAA, Dr. Chika Ukwe of UNIDO and Project Manager, and Dr. Takeiro Nakamura from UNEP.

Introduction

The GCLME National Directors and Stakeholders undertook an in-depth review of the Strategic Action Programme (SAP) document as well as other activities including the National and Regional Demonstration Projects that constitute the main thrust of project implementation.

Objectives

The Meeting focused on the following:

  1. Review of the SAP document.
  2. The Draft Regional Biodiversity Action Plan (including the establishment of a Regional Biodiversity Museum).
  3. The Draft Regional LBA Protocol to the Abidjan Convention.
  4. Progress Report towards a Regional Oil Spill Contingency Plan.
  5. Harmonization of National Fisheries Management Plans at the Regional level.
  6. Progress Report on the implementation of the 4 Regional and 6 National Demonstration Projects.

Participants

In attendance were GCLME Countries' National Directors, Representatives of UN and non UN agencies including UNIDO, UNDP, UNEP, US-NOAA, IMO, IPIECA, FAO and NEPAD, NGOs/CBOs and the Private Sector.
